FILIPPO CIABATTI conductor

Dvořák  Carnival Overture
Nielsen  Flute Concerto with Cheryl Chang ‘18 flute
Shostakovich  Symphony No. 5

The Hop’s resident orchestra opens this concert with Dvořák’s explosively joyful overture, followed by a rippling, glowing concerto by Denmark’s most prominent composer, featuring a talented student soloist. The culmination is Shostakovich’s tremendous Fifth Symphony, written after he suddenly faced Stalin’s disapproval. Although appearing to adhere to strict Soviet cultural edicts, the work subtly conveys the despair and terror that reigned over the nation.

Pre-concert talk with Filippo Ciabatti, Faulkner Recital Hall, 7 pm.
