Professor Kui Dong: Differences Within Oneness performed by Arditti Quartet

Differences Within Oneness performed by Arditti Quartet, available exclusively from Other Minds as a digital download.

Other Minds is pleased to announce the world premiere recording of Differences Within Oneness by composer Kui Dong. The new work represents her first "pure" string quartet and ism in many ways, a study in heterophony. Dong describes her approach to the piece as if composing for a single, multifaceted instrument rather than for an ensemble. It is a work driven more by timbre, rhythm, texture, and subtle microtonality than by typical harmonic and melodic development. The Arditti Quartet's expert execution imbues the work's ten movements with a sense of dimension showcasing their highly contrasting densities.

Technically speaking, Differences Within Oneness is Dong's first foray into the string quartet repertoire. Despite the weight of existing repertoire and, in this particular case, the superb reputation of the ensemble, Dong rose to the challenge with all the conviction and resourcefulness characteristic of her talents to deliver a work of startling beauty and powerful compositional voice.

The album was recorded in March 2014 at Dartmouth College's Spaulding Auditorium by Joel Gordon and is available November 13th, 2015 exclusively as a digital download direct from Other Minds or through Naxos, iTunes, Amazon, and other select digital outlets.
