For acoustic music, numerous composers use a computer program to type in neat easy to read scores. Some do this process while they compose. This saves rewriting time and gives the composer the ability to play back and hear what she/he has composed via the computer.
I do not do the above because my creativity gets lost. I must send out the notes I hear in my head out through my fingers with pencil on to paper and try out what I have written via a piano. I have the music copied onto computer after my pencil score is finished and readable.
For electroacoustic music I use the computer with joy. I use Digital Performer Program with the Motu 2408. DP gives me great freedom in mixing sounds either generated electronically or recorded. I can combine music in MIDI and digital forms. I especially enjoyed using the process in creating music in honor of the 80th birthday of Cuban Composer, Juan Blanco. In that piece, I layered onto tracks different works I had already composed, both electronic & acoustic, fragmented them, and wove them with newly created sounds into a new fabric of a new work. For me, it's a fun process that gives excellent results!
