2019 Gerald Tracy Memorial Piano Competition Results

Five Dartmouth pianists competed in the 2019 Gerald Tracy Memorial Piano Competition this past weekend. The event was adjudicated by pianist Nicholas Burns and piano faculty Gregory Hayes and Sally Pinkas. First prize was won by Xiaoqiu Steven Li, '21, second prize by Selina Noor '22, and third prize by Haocheng Yang '21. Guest judge Nicholas Burns offered an inspiring masterclass the following morning in the Faulkner Recital Hall.

The annual Gerald Tracy Competition has been challenging, as well as showcasing Dartmouth's pianists since January 1983. The Gerald Tracy Memorial Scholarship Fund was created with funds available from life income trusts established at the College by the late Pennington Haile ’24 in memory of his friend Gerald Tracy. Annual revenues from the Fund are awarded each year to a Dartmouth undergraduate who is a serious piano student, who shows potential for a professional career as a concert pianist, and who also qualifies for financial aid under the conditions established by the College Trustees. Each spring the Music Department holds The Gerald Tracy Piano Competition, through which it hopes to identify outstanding piano students to be awarded first, second, and third prize awards. The Gerald Tracy Scholarship is then awarded to the highest-ranking prize winner who is eligible for financial aid. Moreover, the Scholarship is recorded in official College transcripts and represents an important academic recognition.
