The Department of Music would like to honor and acknowledge the death of Robert Northern, aka Brother Ah – one of the pioneers bringing Black music and improvisation practice to Dartmouth in the early 1970s. Northern was one of the first major figures in creative music on the French horn, a collaborator with Thelonious Monk, Gil Evans, Max Roach, Don Cherry, and for ten years with Sun Ra, among many others. He took over from Don Cherry teaching improvisation in the Dartmouth Music Department in 1971, where he stayed for 3 years. To read more about Northern's life and career, please see his obituary in the New York Times.
