The Music Department is delighted to announce that music major Gabe Zuckerberg '20 has been awarded the Jonathan B. Rintels Prize for the best honors thesis in the Arts and Humanities for the class of 2020. Gabe's thesis, "Mikrá Yiánnena: Romaniote Chanting for Shabbat Evening in Greece and New York City," was nominated by the Music Department and subsequently recommended for the Rintels Prize by the Associate Dean of the Faculty for Arts and Humanities. Dean of the Faculty Elizabeth Smith noted (quoting thesis advisor Professor Theodore Levin's assessment) that Gabe's thesis "includes all the components that characterize the best evidence-based scholarship in ethnomusicology: sustained participant-observation fieldwork; rigorous musical analysis contextualized in a broader framework of social, cultural, and historical analysis or critique; and appropriate control of relevant source materials, both musical and literary."
Congratulations to Gabe on this terrific achievement.
