Assistant Professor Allie Martin's latest article, Sound, Gentrification, and Ephethereal Justice, was published in the fall 2024 issue of Ethnomusicology, the top journal in the field. Examining case studies of protests, block parties, and go-go performances in Black neighborhoods facing gentrification in Washington, D.C., Martin argues that sound offers a fleeting glimpse of justice and freedom. Martin terms it "ephethereal" justice: "a justice that is short lived and ephemeral, and yet offers an impression of something not of this world," that is "intentionally impermanent and experiments beyond the bounds of any traditional, state-sanctioned justice."
