Taylor Ho Bynum, director of the Coast Jazz Orchestra, member of the Music faculty, and former bandmate of free-jazz piano legend Cecil Taylor, published a review today in The Baffler titled "Forty-Four Thoughts for Cecil Taylor: A Literary Improvisation." Bynum's album critique-cum-experimental essay listens and responds to Taylor's newly (and posthumously) released The Complete, Legendary, Live Return Concert (Oblivion Records, 2022). With a colorful chain of spontaneous, reflexive, and deeply personal notes, Bynum's writing resonates in style and in form with the album he reviews and with the revolutionary whole of Cecil Taylor's career.
