Dartmouth alum Richard Fu performs Chopin's Fourth Ballade and works by Beethoven, including the energetic "Eroica Variations" and his romantic late-period sonata Op. 109.
Pianist Richard Fu recently completed his Master of Music with distinction at the Royal College of Music (RCM), studying with Andrew Ball. Though he had wanted to become a lawyer growing up and began as a political science major at Dartmouth College, Richard fell in love with classical music while studying abroad in Vienna and changed focus to music midway. At Dartmouth, Richard won the Mark L. Lebowitz 1977 Memorial Prize for outstanding undergraduate music student, Macdonald-Smith Prize for high achievement in musical performances, and the Gerald A. Tracy Memorial Scholarship Piano Competition. Other prizes include the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition and RCM’s Kendall Taylor Beethoven Competition. Richard has performed concertos with the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra, Dartmouth Chamber Orchestra, and the Basement Orchestra in residence at the Arcola Theatre. An avid chamber musician, he studies vocal accompaniment with Roger Vignoles and co-found Béla Trio, a clarinet-violin-piano ensemble focusing on contemporary music. He also performed Stravinsky’s Septet as part of RCM’s collaboration with the Philharmonia Orchestra in the Stravinsky: Myths & Rituals festival, as well as music by Steve Reich and Brett Dean during their respective residencies at the RCM.
Richard’s most important teachers and mentors include Hong Teng, Sally Pinkas, Steve Swayne, and Victor Rosenbaum. During the summers, Richard enjoys attending music festivals through which he has worked with musicians such as Dmitri Alexeev, Paul Badura-Skoda, Christopher Elton, Vladimir Feltsman, Leon McCawley, Peter Serkin, and members of the Cleveland Orchestra. Having performed extensively throughout the USA, Richard has recently performed at Oxford and Cambridge universities, Victoria & Albert Museum, St. Giles-in-the-Fields, St. John’s Smith Square, Regents Hall, Roman Music Festival, and on tour in cities across China.
Richard is currently reading music at Queen’s College, University of Oxford.
